GWENPOOL IS GETTING HER OWN MARVEL COMIC

Fresh off her latest appearance in Gwenpool Holiday Special #1, this bizarre heroine is getting her own ongoing comic book. Today Marvel announced (via Entertainment Weekly) that a new Gwenpool comic will be launching in April 2016.
The Unbelievable Gwenpool will reunite writer Christopher Hastings and art team Guruhiru (comprised of Chifuyu Sasaki and Naoko Kawano), who previously introduced Gwenpool into the Marvel Universe via a series of backup stories in Marvel's Howard the Duck comic.

For those not already on board the Gwenpool train, the character actually made her debut this past July as part of Marvel's "Gwen Variants" promotion. The Gwen Stacy/Deadpool mash-up character on the variant cover of Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars #2 proved so popular that Marvel quickly inducted her into their comic book universe. The Howard the Duck backup stories introduced her as Gwen Poole, a naive, happy-go-lucky assassin with no powers other than the knowledge that she lives in a world of fictional heroes and villains.
Hastings explained the appeal of this bizarre character, telling EW, "Her whole deal is, she’s from the world that she claims to be — some sort of 'real world' — and knows of the Marvel universe as a fictional one. So the series is a lot about her believing she’s in a fictional world with no consequences. She’s seen everyone come back to life at some point, and it sort of seems like she’s living in a video game. And then the book is going to be the universe fighting back at that. Like, 'you can’t really get away with everything' is kind of the struggle there. It’s also sort of, she just assumes, 'I’m obviously a main character so I need to be a superhero' even though she has no powers. I really like all of these comics right now about these teen heroes sort of figuring out what they’re doing in this world. But they come at it from a much more altruistic viewpoint, and I think it’s really fun to have somebody take on the mercenary angle and sort of like, contrast her against someone like Kamala Khan, as we did in the holiday special."

When it debuts, The Unbelievable Gwenpool will mark the third ongoing comic featuring some version of Gwen Stacy, alongside Spider-Gwen and Web Warriors. Not bad for a character who originally died back in 1973.
